It was a great match that took a lot out of Aston Villa. The players had to give everything as they held on to defeat Nottingham Forest at Villa Park, 2-1. This match showed why nothing can ever be taken for granted in the Premier League. Saturday's hosts, however, found a way and responded well after the visitors nearly found a way to grab a point in Birmingham.

The opening 20 minutes saw Donyell Malen and Morgan Rogers score. It seemingly was a concern-free day, as the first part of the match saw Villa in total cruise control. Nottingham, though, woke up and showed why they are where they are in the standings.

For large portions, including the eventual goal by Jota Silva, Forest looked to be the better side. Unai Emery had seen enough. The AVFC boss, enraged, made changes and swung control of the match more toward his favor. That isn't to say that the visitors didn't nearly find the equalizer, but Youri Tielemans and Marcus Rashford nearly added to the lead through the increased play in the final third from the hosts. Rogers also was unfortunate not to have added a second goal himself, as he consistently found himself in good pockets of space.

Willing to turn to next Aston Villa option

More importantly, all of the attention was on Emery making wholesale changes to the starting lineup; it was his second-half adjustments that ultimately saved the three points. His initial XI proved to be the correct recipe. More importantly, when he decided to pivot and bring a change of pace to the side, he once again pushed the right buttons.

This latest EPL encounter showed two things: Emery will be unafraid of plugging in the full cast that is at his disposal, and he has zero issue taking anyone out at any point. This can be for long-term reasons or due to poor performance in the moment. Either way, so far, the Aston Villa boss is getting it right each time.
