Jamal Musiala has ended months of speculation by signing a new long-term contract with Bayern Munich, though a significant release clause leaves the door open for a potential return to the Premier League.
Bayern Munich announced on Friday that Musiala had signed a new contract, tying him to the club until 2030. The 21-year-old, who left Chelsea’s academy to join Bayern in 2019, has become one of Europe’s most exciting talents.
The announcement comes as a setback for Chelsea, who had reportedly shortlisted Musiala as a potential summer target. His journey from Chelsea’s youth system to Bundesliga stardom has been well-documented, with the Blues receiving just £170,000 in compensation when he departed at 16 years old.
Despite the long-term commitment, a release clause included in Musiala’s new contract provides a glimmer of hope for Chelsea and other interested clubs. According to journalist Christian Falk: “Musiala’s new contract includes a €175million (£145.8m, $183.8m) release clause.”
Triggering this clause would allow Chelsea to open negotiations with the player, though it would come at a record-breaking cost. At £145.8 million, Musiala would become the most expensive signing in Premier League history, surpassing the fees Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez (£107m) and Moises Caicedo (£115m).
There is also the option to wait. Reports indicate that Musiala’s release clause will drop to €100m (£83.3m, $105m) in 2029, making a future transfer more feasible.
Chelsea’s financial position under the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) remains strong, and the club is expected to spend significantly in the upcoming transfer window. However, according to TEAMtalk, their immediate focus is on other areas of the squad.
The club’s priority targets are a striker and a centre-back, with Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap identified as a top forward option. As TEAMtalk contributor Ben Jacobs explained: “Delap, I think, is also quite intrigued by the Chelsea project, especially knowing that if he’s the number nine that comes in, he may stand a very strong chance of supplanting or at least competing with Nicolas Jackson.”

Meanwhile, competition for Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is heating up, with Chelsea and Liverpool both in discussions over the left-back’s future.
Chelsea are not alone in their pursuit of Musiala. Manchester City have also been linked with the player, viewing him as a potential replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, whose contract expires in the summer. As TEAMtalk transfer insider Fraser Fletcher reported: “He is also on Manchester City’s shortlist.”
Additionally, Real Madrid, known for their attraction to world-class talents, are believed to be closely monitoring Musiala’s situation. Should any of these clubs decide to meet the release clause, it could set up a fierce bidding war.
The news of Musiala’s contract extension is bittersweet. While it highlights his value to Bayern, the existence of a release clause offers hope of a potential return to Stamford Bridge.
Musiala’s ties to Chelsea, having developed in the club’s academy, add an emotional dimension to the speculation. However, the £145.8 million release clause poses a significant financial hurdle, especially with the club prioritising a striker and centre-back.
Some supporters may argue that breaking the bank for Musiala is unnecessary, especially with Cole Palmer excelling in a similar role. Yet, Musiala’s versatility, creativity, and world-class potential could transform Chelsea’s attack and form a formidable partnership with Palmer.
There is also the question of timing. With the clause reducing to £83.3 million in 2029, waiting could be a shrewder move unless another club, such as Manchester City or Real Madrid, forces Chelsea’s hand earlier.
In the end, while Chelsea’s current priorities may lie elsewhere, Musiala’s availability—albeit at a premium—ensures he will remain a name to watch closely.
