Chelsea fans travelled to St James’ Park.
A Wednesday night 7.45pm kick-off against Newcastle United.
At stake, a place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
A strange situation, as this game followed on only three days after Chelsea 2 Newcastle 1 at Stamford Bridge.
So what is the mood like now amongst Chelsea fans after Wednesday night’s 2-0 defeat to NUFC?
Comments from Chelsea fans via their message boards The Shed End and CFC Net:
‘Have to remember that this was a better Newcastle side than they fielded in the PL at the weekend and a much much much worse Chels team.’
‘We have dominated this and just not scored, a masterclass in missing.’
‘a match Newcastle have won without having to do anything.’
‘Newcastle defended like their lives depend on it. They just wanted it more.’
‘I hope we are active in January transfer market.’
‘Weird game as at times we looked quite good going forward but you cannot legislate for the sort of errors Badiashille & Disasi make and when you throw Enzo and Veiga into the mix who were equally bad, along with a nervy keeper, the result was only going one way. You cannot try and play out from the back with these players – they just aren’t good enough and in the end we were lucky it wasn’t more than 2-0.’
‘Didn’t see the match, saw the result. Looked for the lineup when I saw it I understood why. Not mad, we move on.’
‘I keep dreaming that we hadn’t sold the defenders that provided the funds for Disaster etc al. Back four last night of Tomori, Guehi, Livremento and Hall looks much better than the oafs we played.’
‘I wonder why we sold Hall. He’s like a hard working terrier and in some ways he reminds me of Chopper Harris in his early days.’
‘We showed no respect to this competition and deservedly went out.
Kind of looked like fools thinking those average defenders would have it easy away at one of the trickiest grounds in the Premier League.’
‘What annoys me is that it gives the press ammunition when we lose without Palmer playing, calling us a one man team.
We had enough to beat Newcastle, but didn’t pick the right XI capable of that.’
‘lol what do teams get if they win the carabao cup? Id rather go for top 4 and conference league.’
‘I don’t know what the hell we have done when it comes to goalkeepers and Disasi and Badiashile are terrible and need to be sold.’
‘Only Botman, Bruno and Livramento missing from Newcastles best 11. They wanted it more.’
‘I hate writing players off but I’ve seen enough of Enzo and Mudryk to be fairly confident they won’t make it at Chelsea. The money spent on both was for finished articles. Both have too many real weaknesses.’
‘I think the entire club is at risk of collapse if we don’t get Champions League football.’
‘Newcastle were not even that good, but they deserve to go through as they seem to have wanted it more judging by how many starters they used. I actually think that with Colwill and Gusto in defence next to Tosin and Cucurella, we’d have gone through.’
‘Not too bothered about not going through, I don’t rate much this cup and I’d rather win the ECL and have a go in the FA Cup. This Carabao Cup just loads players with more games and it’s not that prestigious. I just feel for the supporters that travelled to Newcastle tonight.’
‘Defence was awful, could have easily conceded 4 or more. Offensively we didn’t do much without the Palmer lead attack, best chance fall to Felix who really should have done better, that was the moment for any sort of fight back and we never asked questions again after that.’
‘Respect to the 5-6000 fans who went all the way there. I’d be gutted to go that far to see us make just ONE sub when chasing a game. What was going on?’
‘The way Enzo just wimps out the challange on the first goal…captain? Lol.’
‘We threw that opportunity away tonight. Newcastle weren’t good, they made some really nice goal saving blocks and waited for us to f… up defensively, which we managed to do about 6 times in that first half, but that was all they needed to do to beat us.’
‘Line up was never going to be good enough to beat several of Newcastles best side.
Is what it is. We picked them, this is the consequence.’
‘On paper it should’ve challenged. This B team just never looks bothered unless they are playing opposition too scared to press them.’
‘Maresca was probably banking on Newcastle resting some players but as soon as they picked their strongest lineup we was toast.
There’s about 5 players who ain’t good enough to play against teams at this level.
You can’t win a football match against premier league opposition with only 6 players.’
‘Badiashille and Disasi have won the game for Newcastle. Newcastle should buy them.’
‘Are the owners happy to just give this competition up?’
‘This is after all, basically the same Newcastle team 3 days later.’
‘This game shows that we have a good 15-16 players. The rest are average.’
‘I think that is generous tbh. This is a very average Newcastle side and we haven’t tested them at all really. Most of this lot are some way from being average despite costing a fortune.’
‘This was just dreadful..
Any premium league team would beat this team.’
‘I am surprised that Maresca wrote this game off, but the fact that we have been abysmal and he has made no further changes tells me he has no interest in trying to win this game.
Its a strange approach by Maresca with 50 players to keep happy.’
‘I still think we could have nicked something as we had some good chances but couldn’t put them away and honestly, had we nicked it Newcastle would be hard done by. As others have said, they wanted it a lot more than us.’
‘So we now have a ‘B’ team costing millions of pounds sitting around Cobham scratching there backsides waiting to play the odd game in the Tena pants conference league. On the plus side I wouldn’t expect any of those players to be knocking on the managers door demanding to be starting.’
‘I think the team has got as much of an uphill battle as you hardy lot up there tonight had getting up those 26 odd flights of stairs.
Hats off to you all.’
‘Fans put more effort on those stairs than the players did most of the game. Certainly first half.’
‘Not seen the game and in all honesty I completely forgot we were even playing this.’
‘That top 4 place will be on a knife edge and it’s possible that teams like Spurs and Newcastle will contest it with us. I’m more than happy for their eye to be taken off the Prem for a few games.’
‘Too much idealism and not enough pragmatism.
Last night Newcastle set the traps in the first half, the coach needed to bypass them, by going a bit longer. He also picked players not suited to receiving the ball in central areas with opponents right up their tails. Veiga, Fernandez. Jorgensen looked as bad as Sanchez does when pressed and short of space and time.
The coach has done OK generally, last night was not his finest hour (and a half).’
‘The conference team is not as good as the league team.’
‘fortunately they are being sent to Armenia and not Coventry after that performance.’
‘A shocker, at least I had a great night out, as usual, in the toon.’
