Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku is reportedly angling himself for a transfer to Manchester United.

French outlet L’Equipe reports that the 26-year-old could be a shock target for United in the January transfer window, with goals still being an issue for the Reds this season.

It is understood that the Nkunku is unhappy at Chelsea and could take matters into his own hands next year.  This sounds like a threat from the player’s representatives more than anything, and it doesn’t surprise us that they would use United’s name to boost their client’s profile.

The France international is currently playing back-up to Nicolas Jackson under Enzo Maresca, who succeeded Mauricio Pochettino in the summer. Nkunku is not going to remain if he’s only given a bit-part role in the side.

According to Football Insider, Nkunku would be attracted to a potential Old Trafford move should the opportunity arise, with the player keen to play regular first-team football.

Nkunku would have several forwards to compete with at United should he make the move at any point soon. Rasmus Hojlund appears to be the preferred option with Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo taking up the wide roles.

Another player in the frame to compete for a place is new signing Joshua Zirkzee, who has scored just one goal in the Premier League since his summer transfer.

However, Nkunku has scored 10 goals already in the 2024/25 campaign – but just one of those strikes has come in the Premier League.

Since Maresca arrived he has given Nkunku just one start in the Premier League and many believe the writing is on the wall for the French forward at Stamford Bridge. A bulk of his game time has come in the Europa League and League Cup.

Chelsea are no stranger to selling players to rival clubs as seen with Mason Mount and Kai Havertz in recent years.
