Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo played the full 90 minutes of his team’s away match at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, so he must have been frustrated by their failure to score or even to create good chances in a 1-0 defeat.

Speaking in a post-match interview, that frustration showed in a couple of bitter responses from the former Brighton man.

”We were better than them,” Caicedo insisted. “They (Arsenal) are working like seven years together, and us just two years.

“We showed we were better than them, and yeah, that’s good.”

As many have pointed out on social media, this Arsenal team have definitely not been working together for seven years.

Myles Lewis-Skelly was the only member of Sunday’s starting lineup who was even at Arsenal seven years ago, and he was 11 years old at the time.

Even Mikel Arteta is yet to reach that milestone. Seven years ago, he was an assistant coach at Manchester City.

Caicedo joined Chelsea in 2023, and the likes of David Raya, Jurrien Timber, Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard, and Mikel Merino all joined Arsenal in 2023 or later. Add in Lewis-Skelly too and that’s over half of Sunday’s team.

It makes sense that Caicedo would want to present Arsenal as an established side and Chelsea as a work in progress, but with the billions spent by the west London club already it’s just not an accurate reflection of the reality.

As for the suggestion that Chelsea were the better side on the day, Arsenal had more chances, forced more saves, and scored more goals with a higher expected goals total.

The only thing Chelsea had over Arsenal was possession. It was possession they failed to do anything with as they were comfortably beaten to leave the hosts nine points clear of Caicedo’s side.
