Despite shelling out north of £1 billion since the arrival of the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Consortium in May 2022, Chelsea still have a lot of holes in their squad that they need to plug.
The Blues must also clear out deadwood this summer. Chelsea have chucked money on too many players who do not move the needle and must sell them.
One player Chelsea will be eager to get off their books is Joao Felix, who is on £170k a week (Spotrac). The Portuguese attacker joined Chelsea last summer for £45 million and was already angling for a move away by January.
Felix joined AC Milan on loan and showed glimpses of his talent in his first outing, but it has been downhill since then for the Chelsea star.
His poor performances led one Italian pundit to claim “he is as handsome as he is useless”. While that may be taking criticism too far, his latest performance in red and black will not help his reputation.
Milan took on Bologna in a Serie A clash yesterday and needed a spark after winning just once in four games, but Felix put in a poor performance that will not help his case of making it back at Chelsea or getting signed permanently in Milan.
Felix completed only 8/11 passes and had 23 touches, with the game breezing by him as Milan lost 2-1. He won only five of his ten duels and was dribbled past once. He also lost possession eight times.
Felix came off after 61 minutes with no shot. His attempted flicks and tricks are not coming off, and there is every chance Milan will send him back to Chelsea.
The signing of Felix was a senseless move for the Blues, considering the club needed a proper number nine. Instead, they got a luxury player who does not fit into the team.
The Chelsea recruitment strategy over the past few years has been scattergun, and Felix’s situation is yet another example of their missteps in the transfer market.
With Milan unlikely to retain him and few clubs willing to take on his wages and inconsistent output, Chelsea could find themselves stuck with a player they never truly needed.
Unless a suitor is willing to gamble on his raw talent, the Blues may have to brace for another loan spell or a financial loss.
