Failing to win against Verona on Friday would be embarrassing for AC Milan, but it seems that a result will not be fatal for Paulo Fonseca, regardless of what happens.
There have been increasingly regular suggestions about Fonseca’s fate recently, and it should not come as a shock. This morning, there were once again suggestions that he is in a danger zone, so it would make sense for the club to be evaluating options.
Xavi Hernandez has already been suggested as a possible candidate, as has Massimiliano Allegri and Maurizio Sarri, but it seems no chance will be presented, or at least not one yet.
A report from Corriere della Sera (via Milan News) questions if a game against Verona will be ‘fatal again’ with a bad result all but killing any hopes of anything this season if anyone still harboured any hopes about a European place.
A win is an ‘obligation’ in the eyes of the fans, and it should be a view shared by the management considering what is at stake.
Regardless of the result though, it seems Fonseca will not move. The message from the management is that there is calm about the situation, despite the game being a ‘watershed’ for the Portuguese. Failing to win would only split the club further, which cannot happen, but whether there would be a reaction to settle things seems unlikely at present.
