Matteo Gabbia’s recovery is almost finished, and the defender is working through the international break so he can return to action for AC Milan.

This year has been a breakout one for Gabbia, and few would have expected it. In 2023 a route away from Milan seemed the only choice, but he has not stopped working. Instead, he reaped the rewards of a move to Villarreal and when needed he returned to the Rossoneri.

It would be fair to suggest that the expectations were low, but the central defender proved people wrong. A series of good performances made it difficult to look away from the Italian, and this has continued into this season.

Once again, the 25-year-old was overlooked and when Strahinja Pavlovic arrived, his minutes were seemingly going to be cut short. Since then though, he has continued to work for a place, and after establishing himself, he is on track to receive a new contract.

Performances play a large part in the reasoning for this decision, but the club’s motivation to give him the captain’s armband is another huge reason. The defender represents a lot of what the Diavolo should see in a player, and this has shown during the international break.

Corriere dello Sport (via Milan News) writes that the academy graduate is already making the most of his break, and his return to Milanello today was only the latest thing he has been doing to get himself ready to return.

The Juventus match is firmly in his sights and he is doing everything he can to return from the first minute.
