Paris Saint-Germain clinched a spot in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals after edging Liverpool 4-1 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw on aggregate Tuesday night at Anfield.

The visitors struck first in the 12th minute when Nuno Mendes found Ousmane Dembele in the center, and Dembele quickly laid it off to Bradley Barcola on the right. Barcola tried to return the ball, but Ibrahima Konate’s sliding challenge inadvertently set up Dembele for an easy finish.

Neither side could find a winner in extra time, sending the match to penalties. PSG converted all four attempts against Alisson Becker, while Gianluigi Donnarumma delivered in goal.

After conceding a penalty to Mohamed Salah, Donnarumma came up big with saves against Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones. Desire Doue then sealed the victory by calmly burying the final shot, securing PSG’s place in the next round.

Former Liverpool player Daniel Sturridge shared insight on how the Reds squad feels after the early elimination in the Champions League knockout stage.

“These are the fine margins,” Sturridge said on Amazon Prime. “Every single shot which seemed to be going in the back of the net a [PSG] player blocked it. Liverpool will be devastated as these are the nights you live for as a football player.”

PSG will now face either Aston Villa or Club Brugge in the quarterfinals. Currently, the English side have a 3-1 aggregate lead heading into the second leg at Villa Park.
