Liverpool find themselves in pole position this December, an achievement no one quite predicted at the start of the season. As Hari Sethi and Dave Davis discussed in Anfield Index’s Big Decisions podcast, this January window could be the most critical in years.
“Given the opportunity we find ourselves with… let’s not be complacent,” Sethi urged. He reminded listeners of key January signings like Virgil van Dijk and Luis Díaz, who provided vital boosts in past campaigns. But with injuries stretching the squad and upcoming fixtures mounting, Sethi’s message was clear: “Why not look to address some of the small issues just to give yourself the best possible chance to win?”
While both contributors agreed Midfield and left-back options are prime areas for strengthening, the consensus remained that midfield reinforcements are urgent. Sethi aptly highlighted the midfield fatigue concern: “If we don’t add somebody just to give them a bit of a rest… we are really sticking our finger in the socket.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold was under scrutiny following Liverpool’s weekend clash against Fulham. Despite mitigating factors such as returning from injury and playing down to ten men, Dave Davis noted a broader theme: “Every time one of our elite three – Trent, Virgil, and Mo – underperforms, is it always going to be ‘the contract situation?’”
Hari Sethi downplayed contract distractions, attributing Trent’s display to fatigue and game circumstances: “He didn’t look like he was running back full pelt, but they had to manage themselves… Slot will be showing Trent the clips this week; that’s for sure.”
Trent remains Liverpool’s vice-captain and a world-class right-back. While his future remains unresolved, both contributors urged fans not to jump to conclusions, cautioning that individual performances shouldn’t always point to off-field factors.
Ryan Gravenberch emerged as Liverpool’s unlikely hero, showcasing his adaptability with a commanding display, even deputising in defence. “No one thought he’d be doing what he’s doing,” Davis admitted. Gravenberch has exceeded expectations this season, blending work rate with versatility, proving himself vital to Liverpool’s midfield puzzle.
Alongside him, Diogo Jota’s cameo performance epitomised Liverpool’s resilience. Jota’s ability to convert limited opportunities stood out, with Sethi praising his ruthless efficiency: “When he does get a chance, he’ll likely take it.” With Liverpool’s supporting cast crucial to relieving pressure from Mo Salah, Sethi labelled Jota’s fitness as pivotal: “If he stays fit, it could be the difference between success or not this season.”
Andy Robertson’s recent struggles sparked debate. While acknowledging his legendary status, Sethi didn’t shy away from hard truths: “He’s no longer Liverpool’s best left-back – Kostas Tsimikas, when fit, is better right now.” Davis echoed concerns, suggesting Liverpool might need a new left-sided option next season.
As Robertson approaches the final year of his contract, Liverpool’s management faces a balancing act: maintaining squad harmony while planning for the future. Both agreed, however, that Robertson’s leadership and character remain invaluable.
The Big Decisions podcast laid bare the crossroads Liverpool face. Whether bolstering midfield ranks in January or navigating Trent’s contract situation, Sethi and Davis agreed that complacency must be avoided. Liverpool are well-placed for a title challenge, but key decisions over the next month could define their season.
As Sethi concluded with emphasis, “Let’s give the manager as much help as possible… it could be a huge boost.”
