Alessandro Del Piero didn’t shy away from the chatter about being a candidate to helm the FIGC, the Italian Football Association, but suggested there weren’t the conditions for him to do it openly yet. He dished to Sky on Wednesday.

“The matter is very simple. I didn’t wake up one day and said I would run, because somebody needs to formally back me. None of the voters asked me to take on such a role for now. If you’re not invited, you can’t do it on your own.” “I’m very open and available. I like to listen, talk, get informed, and follow everything. It’s obvious that this possibility would eventually have to be taken into consideration with a different team spirit. I say that because I’ve been linked to one side or the other. I’m not that kind of person. The group is fundamental to me. One man or woman wouldn’t suffice to change the dynamics.”

Del Piero alluded that he wouldn’t throw his hat in the ring against current president Gabriele Gravina.

“There must be a team and the right spirit to reach your goals. As far as I’m concerned, my aim isn’t to work against anybody, let alone the FIGC. I’ve given my whole to the national team and won a World Cup. I wouldn’t want to mess with these situations. That being said, it’s not an outright ‘no.’ However, I have to sit down with somebody who wants me and discuss. I’d like to understand certain things. It’s not that easy. There’s nothing concrete at the moment. Nobody has nominated me for the job, not even the Players’ Association.”
