Missed chances punished in 1-2 defeat

A frustrating 1-2 defeat at LASK sees us exit the UNIQA ÖFB Cup. We dominated the play for long periods without managing to turn numerous good chances into goals. Tiredness eventually got the better of us in a gruelling encounter in our boys' second fixture of an intensive week.

Match summary

It began in entertaining fashion as we saw more of the play (75% in the opening quarter of an hour!) and made a determined start.

The only thing that was lacking in our play was shots – and it took a while to fix that. The first effort fell in the 32nd minute to Takumu Kawamura, and after his effort from long-range was blocked, Oscar Gloukh tidied in with a crisp drive that put our side into a deserved 1-0 lead!

We continued to set the tone, even if the hosts battled increasingly into the game and tried to have their say. Alex Schlager was untested in the first half, however, while Moussa Yeo could have made it 2-0, even if he was flagged offside.

The second half was even more intense, with the hosts finally growing into it and Aleksa Terzic having to throw himself into a shot in the 54th minute to prevent an equaliser.

We tried to extend our lead at the other end with Yeo volleying just over and Petar Ratkov also having a good opportunity on his first touch after coming on – both following a perfect pass from Gloukh. Jovicic then seized on a chance, unfortunately, as the Serb sank a screamer into the top corner to level (70').

Thankfully, conceding was the wake-up call our Red Bulls wanted, and they proceeded to take charge of proceedings in the final stages. There was no way through, however, and an extra 30 minutes was called for to settle the semi-final spot!

We started extra time well, with Ratkov testing LASK goalkeeper Tobias Lawal in the 92nd minute. Adam Daghim then saw a big chance as Gloukh won the ball high up and we had men on the overlap, but the Dane's shot was too central. The hosts then threatened again after ten minutes of the extra period, and our energy started to dissipate in our second match of the week.

The time finally came after the change of ends during extra time. We failed to clear an LASK corner sufficiently, and Adeniran headed LASK 2-1 up (109'). We threw everything we had going forward once more, but nothing came.

We have a week now to recharge our batteries before the ADMIRAL Bundesliga restarts on Sunday 9 February at 14:30 CET away at SK Austria Klagenfurt.

We can't be happy today, of course, due to the result. The cup is just about making it through - and we wanted to win the competition. If you don't get the goals despite having opportunities, and don't get a clean sheet, then you end up empty-handed - and of course it's very disappointing. We have to take a good look at ourselves and what went wrong. We have to get good results, and now it'll be in the league, where we have some catching up we need to do.

We had a lot of the ball and dominated the game but didn't seal it. Then LASK scored with the long-range effort. We still had a couple of chances but couldn't get the second goal. We now have to put everything into the league to win matches and succeed.
