Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor has insisted that he does not feel sorry for Southampton after the Saints suffered a 3-2 defeat against the Reds on Sunday.
Russell Martin steered Southampton back to the Premier League this season but he is facing a tough time getting results and the microscope is on him.
They have lost ten of their 12 Premier League games and Martin’s style of play has received a lot of criticism this term.
Saints took a 2-1 lead over league toppers Liverpool on Sunday but went on to lose the game 3-2 and Mellor admitted that he cannot see Southampton staying in the Premier League next season.
The former Reds striker insists that Southampton simply are not learning from their mistakes and explained he does not feel sorry for them.
“I do not feel sorry for them at all”, Mellor said post match on LFC TV about Southampton.
“How they play, they are not learning.
“They know they cannot get away with that in the Premier League, they have got away with it in the Championship.
“They cannot get away with playing this style of football.
“Defensively, they are going to give so many chances away, so many goals away and they are not learning.
“I see no chance of Southampton staying up with that side if they are going to continue playing in that way.”
Martin has been insistent on sticking to his style, but he did field Paul Onuachu against Liverpool and his side tried to get the ball up to the tall striker whenever possible.
