Newcastle United will face Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday at St James’ Park, and ahead of the game, Eddie Howe has shared the team news.
The Magpies have already reached the final of the Carabao Cup, where they will face Premier League leaders Liverpool at Wembley, and Howe will be aiming to do well in the other domestic cup competition.
Alexander Isak missed the game against Liverpool in midweek and there is a high possibility that he could be rested on Sunday as well.
Howe said that Isak’s injury is not a long-term problem, but the club will not take any risks with him at this stage of the season. At the same time, he added that if Isak is fit, he will play.
He said on Isak: “We will see today. I haven’t seen him since the game. We will see how he is today. We don’t think it’s a long-term problem. There was no risk taken on Wednesday and there can’t be with the stage of the season we’re in.
“There is always a risk with any player but we wouldn’t take any risks on his long-term fitness. We will see how he is today and if he is fit, he will play.”
Callum Wilson started against Liverpool, but he appeared to have picked up an injury in that game.
Howe has allayed the fears, saying it was just a cut in his eyes, and “fingers crossed” the striker should be fine to face Brighton.
The Magpies boss on Wilson: “I believe Callum Wilson is ok. He took a cut to his eye but nothing more than that. Fingers crossed he is fine.”
Howe has been saying for a while that Sven Botman and Joelinton are close to returning to full fitness, and he has admitted that there is a chance for both to get involved.
The Newcastle boss added: “They have a chance [to play on Sunday]. Today is a big day for them. We will see how they are and whether they train with the team for the first time or not. Knowing both players, they will be very keen to be involved.”
Isak has been in sensational form for the Magpies this season, and his absence makes a lot of difference.
Howe has admitted that his side can still be successful without Isak, but they have to do it in a different way. He has refused to admit that the Magpies are a one-man team.
