Frankfurt have made a positive start to 2025, having taken maximum points from their first two matches of the calendar year. Die Adler recorded a narrow 1-0 away win over St. Pauli, before they cruised to all three points in their midweek home outing against Freiburg. Omar Marmoush, who continues to be linked with a move to Manchester City, scored one goal and provided two assists to help Dino Toppmöller’s side claim a 4-0 victory, leaving them in third position with 33 points to their name.
That result represented their fifth win in eight home league games, ensuring they will carry confidence into Friday’s meeting with Dortmund. However, Frankfurt will be mindful of the fact they have failed to win any of their last seven matches against Dortmund since they recorded a 2-1 away victory in April 2021. Meanwhile, they have not beaten die Schwarzgelben on home turf since picking a 2-1 win back in November 2016.
Frankfurt are unable to call upon Aurèle Amenda due to an ankle injury.
In contrast to Frankfurt, Dortmund have made a poor start to the calendar year, having failed to take anything from their first two matches of 2025. They fell to a narrow 3-2 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen, before they suffered a surprise loss in their midweek outing against relegation-threatened Holstein Kiel. Dortmund conceded three goals without reply in a disastrous first half at the Holstein-Stadion. Gio Reyna and Jamie Gittens reduced the deficit to one, before Kiel’s Lewis Holtby was given his marching orders. Despite being reduced to 10 men, Kiel managed to add a fourth in stoppage time to condemn Dortmund to a 4-2 defeat, leaving them in 10th place and five points adrift of the top four.
Having overseen one win in seven competitive matches, Şahin is now facing a battle to keep his job at Signal Iduna Park, knowing he needs to spark an upturn in fortunes sooner or later. However, claiming all three points on Friday may be easier said than done given the fact they have won just one of their eight away league games this season (D2, L5). However, they do have the chance to complete a league double over Frankfurt after claiming a 2-0 victory in August’s reverse fixture.
Dortmund remain without defender Niklas Süle, who is currently sidelined with an ankle injury.
