Chelsea began their season with a game against Manchester City, and now, 6 months later, the Blues play the return fixture.

So it’s a great chance to look back at the progress made in that time, and that’s just what Enzo Maresca did on Sky Sports today as they interviewed him ahead of the big game coming up later tonight.

Perhaps the most interesting question from interviewer James Savundra was about which area Maresca had seen the biggest improvement in since he arrived. The Italian coach was very clear in his answer:

“The way we try to play on the ball and off the ball,” the Italian coach said.

“Since the day we started we’ve changed to 4 or 5 different structures, on the ball and off the ball. And in such a short period that’s so difficult to do, in 6 months the players can understand the game better, they can understand different structures. So this is probably the thing I’m most happy about.”

Enzo Maresca speaks to Sky Sports.

There’s no doubting that it’s been impressive how quickly Maresca adapted his style to his squad and vice-versa. He quickly abandoned the meticulous passing we saw from his Leicester team last season and in some of our preseason struggles and introduced a far more dynamic counter-attacking system which saw us start the season really strongly.

Along the way we’ve seen all manner of adaptations with individual players – Enzo Fernandez pushed forward, Moises Caicedo at right back, Reece James or Malo Gusto at left back, Pedro Neto on either side, every possible combination of wingers tried.

We wonder what he’s got in store for Man City this afternoon?
