David Prutton has his say on where Rohl's future may lie.

Sheffield Wednesday look set to face a battle to keep Danny Rohl, with a series of clubs circling around the German boss.

Leicester City and Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig are two of the interested parties, while Southampton are also extremely keen.

According to The Sun, the Saints see Rohl as their preferred candidate, having recently parted company with Ivan Juric when their relegation from the Premier League was confirmed.

Having previously spent time at St Mary’s as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s assistant, the Wednesday boss was previously linked with the role when they sacked Russell Martin back in December.

David Prutton believes Rohl may be tempted by a move to Southampton

At the time of Martin’s dismissal, the Saints job was arguably something of a poisoned chalice. Although their relegation was confirmed recently, their fate had been clear for months before.

With that in mind, the idea of moving to a new club and instantly getting a relegation added to your CV was likely a huge deterrent for any potential candidates.

Now though, with Rohl once again coming under consideration, fears among Owls fans that he could leave the club seem much more justified this time around.

With that in mind, we asked EFL pundit David Prutton where he feels Rohl’s future may lie.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Prutton said: “I think we can all see how that move could be a very realistic possibility.

“Sheffield Wednesday will, of course, fight for him tooth and nail because they’ve got a very good manager there.

“Given Danny’s history with Southampton and that ability to work at the top end of the Championship with a club that will want an instant return to the Premier League, that could prove to be very tempting.

“Southampton quite simply need to put right what they have done from a managerial point of view. Russell (Martin) did a wonderful job in taking them up and they then deemed him to be surplus to requirements and brought in a man with no impact whatsoever really.

“Whoever comes in will have one hell of a job on their hands, but it’s one hell of a club.”

Wednesday should worry about Rohl taking players with him if he was to go

Having endured a tumultuous relationship with owner Dejphon Chansiri, who can be notoriously difficult to work with, it would be no surprise if Rohl feels that he has to move away from Hillsborough in the near future in order to progress his career.

That will understandably be a concern for Wednesday, who have undergone a significant transformation under the German, and appear to be heading in the right direction as a team.

If the 35-year-old is to depart South Yorkshire at the end of the season, the Owls would surely fear him taking some of their bright young talents with him.

19-year-old goalkeeper Pierce Charles has broken into the side lately in place of Brighton loanee James Beadle, and looks set to have a big future ahead of him.

Meanwhile, winger Djeidi Gassama (pictured) has been one of Rohl’s star performers and, at just 21 years of age, has massive potential to improve and develop into a top-level player.

Gassama has notched seven goals and one assist from 38 league appearances so far this term, and he has become even more important to the Owls after a bright debut campaign last time out.

While there are obviously no guarantees that Rohl would look to take either with him to Southampton, the last thing Wednesday will want is to lose any of their promising young players.

The Owls have one of the Championship’s oldest squads, with an average age of over 27, and there will be little re-sale value in several of their older players.

However, where Charles and Gassama are concerned, they have the possibility of developing two youngsters who they could make a significant profit from in future years, if Rohl doesn’t try and exit with one or both.
