Liverpool moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table after the controversial 2-2 draw against Everton on Wednesday. With just 14 league games remaining, the title race is in full throttle and with Arsenal facing a favourable run of fixtures, it could go right down to the wire.
Nevertheless, Arne Slot has received many plaudits since his arrival on Merseyside and rightly so. Many thought that the task of replacing Jurgen Klopp was an impossible one, but the Dutchman has been flying at Anfield.
Former Chelsea midfielder and Premier League manager Gus Poyet spoke to Anfield Index and shared his thoughts on Slot’s debut season…

“He really has done so much better than expected,” began Poyet, “I knew what he had done in the Netherlands but the doubt was always in replacing Klopp, just like at Arsenal after Arsene Wenger and at Man United after Sir Alex Ferguson.”
Both of those clubs have hugely struggled in the past decade since the departures of their own iconic managers, winning just a handful of trophies and no league titles or European trophies.
Slot is already on track to bust that myth in his first year, currently the favourites to win both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League this season. All whilst also being in the Carabao Cup Final, where the Reds will face Newcastle United.
“It has been spectacular and amazing!” continued Poyet, “Without knowing him, he seems very intelligent and he knows exactly what is needed.”
“He has been very, very impressive and for me he is Manager of the Year.”

“I think Liverpool will win it,” said Poyet, “But I wouldn’t have said that a couple of months ago!”
“Arsenal have to finish at least second because of how long Arteta has been at the club for now,” continued Poyet, “Anything else is a huge failure.”
The next few weeks are set to be critical for the title race, with Liverpool’s home clash with Wolves being followed by tricky away tests at Aston Villa and Manchester City, before a huge test against Newcastle United at Anfield.
Arsenal face a favourable couple of fixtures, with Leicester City and West Ham United proceeding away trips to Nottingham Forest and Manchester United. The Gunners then face Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium, in a game that could be crucial for Enzo Maresca’s side and their battle for UEFA Champions League qualification.
There’s a long way to go in this race, but as it stands, that seven point lead is a healthy one for Arne Slot’s men.
