You have to hand it to the Sunderland fans, they really know how to put Newcastle United supporters and NUFC in their place.

This story (see below) popped up on my NUFC timeline today (Sunday 29 December 2024).

Presumably because the article mentions Newcastle United.

Sunderland fans saw their team lose 1-0 at Stoke City today, the home side without a manager and this win over the Mackems is their first in ten games.

The Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has now overseen only four wins in his last 12 Championship matches and I was amused by what this Sunderland fans site had to say after defeat to relegation battling Stoke City…

Sunderland AFC News site report – 29 December 2024:

‘Sunderland fans caught singing chant about Regis Le Bris and Newcastle United

Sunderland were backed by a strong away crowd that packed out the corner next to the goal that the Black Cats attacked in the second stanza, and they were caught singing one chant about their North East rivals.

Sunderland fans will often look to aim a sly dig at bitter rivals Newcastle United, and they, on this occasion, sang about the Tyneside based club and current Black Cats boss Le Bris.

Sunderland fans were singing ‘We don’t care about Geordies, they don’t care about me, all we care about is Regis Le Bris’.

The Sunderland boss really has become a fan favourite in the short time he has been at the club, with him showing incredible man-management to lead his side to 4th in the league table.

However, based on his start to life at Sunderland, there is no doubt that he has cemented his reputation as a top coach, as seen by him being able to help the Black Cats to 4th in the table, a true achievement…’

Wow.

Yes, that was stunning from Sunderland fans, that brilliant chant featuring ‘Geordies’ and their manager’s name. I only wish Newcastle United fans could come up with chants of that standard.

In fact, I think I would rank it on the same level as the hilariously woeful flag display when Newcastle United hammered them 3-0 in the FA Cup in January.

As for Regis Le Bris having now ‘cemented his reputation as a top coach’, I had to go away and check those things, you know, those awkward things called ‘facts’, they often get in the way of a good story.

This is currently Regis Le Bris’ third season as a manager, in 2022/23 he helped Lorient to a tenth place finish in Ligue 1.

In his second (2023/24) season in management, he relegated Lorient, who ended up second bottom of Ligue 1, before heading to Sunderland after that relegation.

I think with ‘top coach’ Regis Le Bris we need a little context here, Sunderland are fourth top in the most woeful Championship we have probably ever seen.

Burnley and Sheffield United were two of the very worst Premier League sides for a long time last season, they finished in the bottom two spots.

Sheffield United rock bottom after winning only three games all season.

Burnley only winning five all season and two of the five were against Sheffield United! Whilst one of the other three was against Luton, who also got relegated.

Yet despite proving so out of their depth in the Premier League last season AND losing their best players in the summer after relegation, both Burnley and Sheffield United are two of the trio at the top of the Championship above the mackems.
