Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed a double injury concern following the club’s 2-1 Europa League win over Rangers on Thursday night.
The Red Devils dominated proceedings against the Scottish outfit, and they were unlucky in the opening half as the referee chalked off Matthijs de Ligt’s goal.
United eventually took the lead with Jack Butland putting the ball into his own net in the 52nd minute.
Amorim’s side looked in complete control of the game before a defensive mishap from Harry Maguire allowed Cyriel Dessers to equalise out of the blue in the 88th minute.
However, the Red Devils had the last laugh, with captain Bruno Fernandes bagging a stoppage-time winner with a low volley from a splendid Lisandro Martinez cross.
Speaking after the game, the manager revealed that De Ligt’s half-time substitution was injury-related and added that the same was the case with Yoro early into the second half.
He told Manutd.com: “He [De Ligt] has a pain. So he cannot risk [it]. Leny felt pain also, so he cannot risk [it]. We have a lot of different players that can play so it was that.
“We cannot lose anybody. Everybody has to be prepared. I need to show confidence, instead of putting players in for a long time, and we have other players who can play.”
In a separate interview with TNT Sports, the Portuguese was more specific and confirmed that the duo picked up leg injuries during the dramatic late win over Rangers.
He said (via Manutd.com): “He [Matthijs] felt something in his leg. Also Leny [Yoro] and we cannot risk anything. I know that we have to win but we also have to protect the players and show that everyone matters, everyone is important too in this moment.”
United had plenty of scoring chances against Rangers, but lacked the cutting edge in front of goal. It almost cost them at the end, but Fernandes sealed a late victory.
With the win, the Red Devils have moved to fourth in the league phase of the Europa League, and they are two points ahead of ninth-placed Galatasaray after seven games.
The club have to finish in the top eight to directly qualify for the last 16 without a knockout round play-off. They may have to beat FCSB on the road in the final league outing.
Meanwhile, injuries to De Ligt and Yoro are an obvious concern. Judging by Amorim’s comments, they were probably substituted as a precaution ahead of the Fulham game.
If they are sidelined, Amorim has quality back-up on the bench. He could play Harry Maguire and Noussair Mazraoui alongside Martinez in the heart of the United defence.
Victor Lindelof has returned to training after a hamstring injury and could feature too.
