Speaking after Southampton lost to Liverpool at the weekend, a former Liverpool player has made a blunt Southampton relegation verdict.
Southampton are far from covering themselves in glory this season. In fact, they have won just one game since their promotion to the top flight, and sit rock bottom of the standings.
Against the league-leaders Liverpool at the weekend, Southampton stunned the world by going a goal ahead in the second half. However, they surprised nobody when conceding two goals and dropping all three points.
So, Southampton fans are torn. There are those who are glass-half-full and others who are glass-half-empty. Someone on the pessimistic side is a former Liverpool player.
Speaking after Southampton lost to Liverpool at the weekend, a former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor claimed to have no sympathy for Southampton. He even tipped the Saints for relegation unless they change their playing style.
On LFC TV, Mellor said: I do not feel sorry for [Southampton] at all. How they play, they are not learning. They know they cannot get away with that in the Premier League... I see no chance of Southampton staying up with that side if they are going to continue playing in that way.”
Mellor also referred to the defensive mistakes which Southampton made. This was quite a common analysis of Southampton's form, with some even claiming that Alex McCarthy was entirely to blame for three points beind dropped on the day.
Southampton were not unfortunate to lose against Liverpool. The ultimate result could have been avoided, had they done the basics.
Unfortunately, if you are going to hand chances to any team, it shouldn't be the league leaders Liverpool. They were handed only a few opportunity by the Saints but of course, the Reds were going to snatch them with ease.
Now, Southampton face an uphill battle to avoid relegation. The odds are stacked against them, given their position in the table. However, it only takes a few results for the tide to turn.
