Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has provided an insight into the reasoning behind his absence from the club’s most recent matchday squad.

Barcelona of course took to the pitch once more this past weekend, in their final outing before the international break.

Making the trip to Spain’s capital for a crunch La Liga showdown with Atlético Madrid, the Blaugrana recovered from two goals down, to ultimately triumph 4-2.

The aforementioned De Jong, however, played no part.

After originally being pencilled in to start the fixture, the midfielder was at the last minute removed from Barcelona’s squad entirely.

Manager Hansi Flick attributed as much to ‘discomfort’ on De Jong’s part.

And as alluded to above, on Wednesday, the Dutchman himself has spoken out on the situation.

During a press conference whilst on international duty with The Netherlands, De Jong revealed that he ‘vomited a lot’ on Sunday:

“After eating, I suddenly felt like vomiting and my stomach hurt too. I think I ate something bad and vomited a lot, but the next day I felt better.”
