BBC Radio Berkshire journalist Tim Dellor has also revealed, among other things, that senior management are concerned about how the bills are going to be paid this month, with no money coming into the club at this stage.

The Royals have been in limbo for quite a while now, ever since Rob Couhig's deal to buy the club fell through in September, even though they are doing well in the league.

And there have been real concerns about the future of the club and how it's going to be funded, with some fans worried about the possibility of the Berkshire side not making it until the end of the season.

Despite this, there has been a considerable amount of interest in the club since Dai Yongge promised to put the club up for sale in 2023.

The club were even in a period of exclusivity back in October, with Paul Taylor now confirmed to be the man who was the bidder.

That period of exclusivity has now ended, but he remains interested in the club and it will be interesting to see what materialises in the coming weeks.

Reading FC takeover update emerges

There is nervousness about how the bills are going to be paid - and that has presented the Royals with three options - according to BBC Radio Berkshire journalist Dellor.

Players could be sold to make up for the shortfall, a potential bidder could inject funds into the club or the club could enter administration.

Taylor, who will need to pass EFL tests, is currently a "serious contender" to buy the club but if he doesn't step up his interest, the club will be re-engaging with other parties at the start of next week.

It's claimed that current owner Mr Dai is having weekly meetings in the UK regarding the sale of the club.

Couhig is still in the race to try and purchase the Royals - and it's believed that the legal action he has taken against Mr Dai won't be an issue in terms of getting a sale over the line - which is a bit of positive news.

Nigel Howe is also back involved after his ban.

The Royals’ supporters have fought for their club in the last 18 months and deserve an end to this saga.

But they will be worried, both about the short term and the longer term.

In the short term, player sales would not be good news for them, because they don’t have enough squad depth as it is and could really suffer if they lose one or two key players.

Losing Harvey Knibbs, who has recently been linked with moves to Derby County and Oxford United, would be gutting for them.

In the longer term, there are still questions about the future of the club.

So many players are out of contract at the end of the season - and it could be catastrophic if they don’t have a takeover by then - so fans will be praying that there’s meaningful progress on a sale in the coming days and weeks.
