AC Milan defender Matteo Gabbia has reacted to his contract renewal, describing it as a ‘great personal moment’ for him in his career.
Several sources reported in the days and weeks prior that Gabbia had reached an agreement with the club to extend the deadline of his contract, and it was announced yesterday that he has penned fresh terms until 2029.
It is certainly a justified reward for a player who embodies the idea of ‘Milanismo’, having grown up on the outskirts of the city and having progressed through virtually every level of the youth sector.
Gabbia spoke during an interview with Milan TV which was published the day after the signing of his new deal, and we have translated his comments below.
“I am certainly very happy, it is a great personal moment for me. It is a dream come true and the continuation of a story that began many years ago,” he said.
“I have reached a point in my career where I feel important to the team and well-liked by the entire Milan environment. I hope that this can only be the beginning of something even more beautiful in the coming years.
“I live peacefully, with my family and my partner who will soon be my wife, I am happy to share all the moments with them. I am lucky enough to play for the team of my city, I feel at home and it is magical.
“I try to bring out the positive in me both as an athlete and as a person and pass on to my teammates what I can, even if they are all super professional. I want to make history for the club by winning titles together with my teammates.
“We need to grow and find consistency this season to take the field and win. On a personal level, I want to continue to earn the club’s trust with commitment, dedication and sacrifice.”
Ever since returning from his loan spell with Villarreal in January, Gabbia has certainly demonstrated the aforementioned qualities that he wishes to show.
He has been the most consistent centre-back in 2024, and has already begun the path to becoming a cult hero given his derby winner against Inter a couple of months ago.
