Manchester United have shown interest in Leicester City midfielder Harry Winks, who has enjoyed a resurgence in form over the last 12 months or so.

Winks, a product of Tottenham Hotspur’s academy, made his senior breakthrough under Mauricio Pochettino before slowly drifting away from the first team plans in North London due to fitness issues.

In the summer of 2023, Winks, after an underwhelming loan spell at Sampdoria, permanently parted ways with Spurs, dropping to England’s second tier to play for Leicester.

The 28-year-old is known for his versatility and technical security in possession and played a crucial role in helping the Foxes return to the Premier League this summer.

He has also started all five of Leicester’s league games this season. In the League Cup tie against Tranmere Rovers, the defensive midfielder impressively added a goal and an assist to his name late in August.

Now, according to a report in Spain, his recent rise has attracted the attention of United.

According to Fichajes, United are interested in “acquiring his services” as they see him as a “low-cost option” to strengthen their midfield.

The Red Devils are understood to be in the hunt for midfield solutions, and Winks’ profile supposedly “fits perfectly” into Erik ten Hag’s plans.

The Englishman is tied to Leicester until June 2026, and his role under Steve Cooper has become “irreplaceable” for the Foxes.

Despite his importance to their project, it is suggested Leicester are not asking for an “exorbitant amount”, making Winks an appealing target for United, as his signing would allow the Mancunian giants to address the position without impacting their books too much.

United spent big this summer to reinforce their midfield, acquiring Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal that could rise to £50.7m with add-ons. As such, exploring the transfer market for an affordable option to strengthen their midfield further may prove to be a good strategy.

In that regard, United have also been linked with their ex-midfielder Angel Gomes, who has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Lille and will be available on a free transfer next summer.
