Man United boss Ruben Amorim opened the door for Harry Maguire to retain the captain’s armband ahead of the upcoming clash against Newcastle United.
The Red Devils will be without their first skipper Bruno Fernandes who wasn’t too skipperly against Wolves on Boxing Day. The playmaker earned a yellow card in the first half for an avoidable challenge. And instead of taking heed afterwards, he committed an absolutely needless foul on Nelson Semedo just after the restart to leave his teammates with a man down for an entire half.
Thereafter, the writing was on the wall for the already-struggling United, as Wolves scored twice to earn a 2-0 victory in front of their exhilarated supporters at the Molineux, while the travelling supporters on the away end weren’t even interested in hearing the players’ post-match apology.
So with Fernandes serving a ban against Newcastle on Monday, the fans are left to wonder who will be donning the captain’s armband.
Many believe Maguire would be the right fit for the role after managing to revitalize his career as of late. He has also been one of the few players at the club who are still delivering decent performances.

For his part, Amorim, who had already heaped praise on the 31-year-old in previous weeks, seems open to the idea.
“You will have to wait and see about the captain.” said the 39-year-old after the contest against Wolves (via the Mirror).
“Harry is working really well. He’s focused on the job, not what people say. He gives no excuses – even if he’s had some tough moments. In that respect, he’s an example. He’s there to play to help the team and he’s trying to do that.”
Maguire was appointed club captain in January 2020, but was later stripped of the role by Erik ten Hag due to his shaky displays at the back which also saw him dropped from the starting lineup.
Therefore, the defender’s stint at Old Trafford could come full circle if he manages to restore the armband, albeit on a temporary basis.
