Tottenham Hotspur have struggled badly this season under Ange Postecoglou, and there are not many positives the fans can reflect on.
Spurs have endured an injury-ravaged season, and at one point, Postecoglou was running out of defensive options. The results have not gone their way as they wanted, and now Postecoglou’s job is on the line.
Heung-Min Son has played with some fantastic players at Tottenham, including Harry Kane, and he feels Spurs have one young talent who can go on to achieve “big things” in his career.
In an interview with Goal, the South Korean superstar was asked to name one player (not necessarily from his team) who will achieve “big things” in his career.
The Spurs winger wasted no time mentioning Archie Gray, which shows how highly Tottenham’s senior players rate the youngster.
Tottenham signed Gray from Leeds United in the summer transfer window for a fee of around £30m in a deal that saw Joe Rodon moving in the opposite direction.
The 19-year-old is a versatile player who has really impressed this season. Postecoglou wanted to gradually integrate him into the side, and Gray was featuring regularly in the Europa League at the start of the season.
However, injuries to Micky van de Ven, Ben Davies, and Cristian Romero created a big crisis in defence, and Postecoglou was forced to use Gray regularly in central defence alongside Radu Dragusin.
Gray has made 14 starts in the Premier League this season, and two more appearances have come from the bench. He also made seven appearances in the Europa League.
While this was unexpected, the exposure will help him grow as a player. The best part is Gray took this as a challenge, and he excelled at it.
The Tottenham boss praised the exciting young talent and acknowledged his contribution this season.
He said: “It goes under the radar but the job Archie Gray’s doing is ridiculous,” Postecoglou said about the summer signing from Leeds, who is a midfielder by trade but has been playing in defence.
“He’s 18-years-old and has never played centre-back before and he’s playing in the Premier League and Europe every game. It’s just incredible and Ben (Davies) has also been brilliant.”
Gray is a fantastic young talent, and Spurs have high hopes for him.
