There is a recent history of highs and lows in matches officiated by Szymon Marciniak for Inter Milan ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Barcelona.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They note the Nerazzurri have won just two of the matches the Pole has had the whistle for.
Polish referee Szymon Marciniak will take charge of the second leg of Inter Milan’s Champions League semifinal tie against Barcelona.
French referee Clement Turpin had largely kept a lid on the first leg.
Now, UEFA are entrusting the highly experienced Marciniak to get it right in the all-important second leg.
Marciniak is certainly one of the most well-regarded referees in European competitions. Although he is certainly not without controversy.

As the Gazzetta notes, Marciniak has been the referee for nine different matches involving Inter Milan.
Seven of these have come in the Champions League. And another two have been in the Champions League.
Inter will not have positive memories of the last time they played a match with Marciniak as the referee.
The Pole was the referee for the second leg of last season’s round of sixteen tie between Inter and Atletico Madrid.
That match saw the Spanish side prevail 2-1 on the night, and then eliminate Inter on penalties.
Meanwhile, Marciniak was also the referee for the 2023 Champions League. Inter lost that match 0-1 against Manchester City.
In total, Inter have won two matches with Marciniak as the referee. They have drawn a further three, and lost four.
Of note, Marciniak has refereed two matches between Inter and Barcelona in the Champions League. Both have come in the group stage of the competition.
Both of these matches ended in draws.
There was a 1-1 draw at the San Siro on November 6th, 2018. And then, a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Camp Nou on October 12th, 2022.
