Newcastle United are the first Premier League team to secure their place in Europe for next season.

Eddie Howe’s side beat Liverpool 2-1 to win the Carabao Cup at Wembley, ending the club’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy. In the process, Newcastle assured themselves of at least a Europa Conference League place for next season, a prize awarded to the Carabao Cup winners.

The race for Europe looks set to be the most intriguing part of the Premier League run-in and, incredibly, we have a scenario where 11 English teams could compete in UEFA competitions next season.

Here is how it could happen.

  1. Liverpool, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Manchester City finish in the top four, places which guarantee Champions League qualification.
  2. Newcastle finish the season fifth and secure Champions League football, with England set to be allocated an additional place due to the Premier League’s co-efficient ranking.

The European places could then be increased to 11 if all of the following occurs.

  • Aston Villa win the Champions League and finish eighth to 10th.
  • Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur win the Europa League and finish in the top 10.
  • Chelsea win the Europa Conference League and finish eighth to 10th.
  • Brighton, Fulham or Bournemouth finish sixth and qualify for the Europa League
  • Brighton, Fulham or Bournemouth finish seventh and win the FA Cup.

In the above scenario, the Premier League would have SEVEN teams in the Champions League, alongside three in the Europa League and one in the Conference League.

An example would be:

Champions League qualifiers: Liverpool, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, Newcastle (all top-five finishes in Premier League), Manchester United/Tottenham (Europa League winners), Aston Villa (Champions League winners

Europa League qualifiers: Brighton/Fulham/Bournemouth (Sixth place in Premier League), Brighton/Fulham/Bournemouth (FA Cup winners), Chelsea (Conference League winners)

Conference League qualifiers: Brentford (11th in Premier League).
