There were emotional scenes as midfielder Edoardo Bove collapsed during a Serie A match between Fiorentina and Inter Milan yesterday.
Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, run down the timeline of the 22-eyar-old’s shock medical emergency which brought the match to a halt.
Bove had been in the Fiorentina starting eleven yesterday.
And the Italian international played the first fifteen or so minutes of the match seemingly as normal.
In the tenth minute of play, there was a coming-together between Bove and Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries.
Both players had a hold of each other’s shirts. And both fell to the ground.
Referee Daniele Doveri whistled for a foul against Inter’s Dumfries.
The Gazzetta notes that when Bove got up he reported some dizziness.
Furthermore, Bove’s shirt was torn as a result of the incident. He replaced it with a fresh shirt.
From then on, Bove played on. But only for a few more minutes.
By coincidence, Bove’s collapse happened right after a significant moment during yesterday’s match.
Inter captain Lautaro Martinez had put the ball in the back of the net. However, the goal was not given due to the ball having crossed the line in the buildup.
This caused Inter players and coaching staff to argue with the referees.
But in the meantime, Bove was struggling away from the action.
There had been reports that the Fiorentina midfielder had bent down to tie his shoe.
However, the Gazzetta reports, this did not seem to be the case. Rather, Bove had crouched down and put his hand on the ground to steady himself.
But then, Bove got up and took a few more steps. However, he was hardly able to continue. and collapsed.
It was not a completely abrupt collapse, as Bove appeared to realize that he was struggling and braced himself before losing consciousness.
Quickly, there were distraught reactions from players from both teams as they realized what had happened.
Several players were visibly in tears. And some consoled each other.
Referee Daniele Doveri was also showing his emotions as he did his best to keep calm and handle the situation.
Some players looked angry as they aimed to get the medical staff on the pitch quicker.
In the end, it was several dramatic and tense minutes, as the thought of the match that had been ongoing just prior quickly became irrelevant.
