A new report has taken readers inside the secret visit undertaken by Florian Wirtz and his parents to Manchester City this week, as a mammoth transfer saga continues.
The Germany international is believed to be Manchester City’s number one priority target when it comes to replacing the outgoing club legend Kevin De Bruyne this summer, but they face intense competition from a number of clubs.
Bayern Munich are understood to be leading the race for the player given his personal lean towards remaining in German football, while Real Madrid could have the advantage of tempting Wirtz into a reunion with Xabi Alonso next season.
Closer to home and Liverpool are said to have opened up a line of dialogue between themselves and the 22-year-old’s representatives, making themselves known as a potential destination should the player wish to take his career to England.
But this week brought about claims from both Germany and England that suggested Florian Wirtz, alongside his parents, made a trip to Manchester.
That is according to the information of The Times’ Constantin Eckner, who claims Wirtz himself visited Manchester as Etihad Stadium officials stepped up their efforts to sign the Germany international from Bayer Leverkusen.
It is revealed that the 22-year-old took a tour of Manchester City’s facilities on Tuesday and spoke to ‘key figures’ within the Etihad Stadium accompanied by his mother, Karin Gross, and his father Hans Wirtz – who act as his agents.
For now it remains to be seen whether the visit has had any impact on the player’s thinking as to his future, although some reports are indicating that a decision could be made as soon as next week.
Any preference of club would then leave Bayer Leverkusen to negotiate over a price tag, with the German giants believed to be preferring a sale abroad in order to avoid strengthening a direct rival in the Bundesliga.
Given the financial strength of Premier League clubs, that would leave many thinking as though Manchester City and Liverpool would lead the chase, although the player himself will ultimately dictate where his future lies given the positive relationship he has with his club.
