Simone Inzaghi and the Inter Milan club directors have set an emergency summit to discuss the possibility of signing a defender.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via TuttoMercatoWeb. They report that the coach and directors will meet after Sunday’s match against Empoli.

At the moment, Inter are dealing with a thorny situation in defense.

Defender Francesco Acerbi is 36 years of age, and no longer appears to be reliable on a fitness level. He has been struggling to shake off a thigh problem over the past few weeks.

Stefan de Vrij has filled in ably while Acerbi has been out. However, it has not been easy for the Dutchman to absorb so much playing time, and he has had a few physical problems of his own.

There is therefore significant doubt as to whether or not Inter will be able to see out the rest of the season with just de Vrij and Acerbi as defenders for the centre of the back three.

Therefore, the Nerazzurri could feel that they have no choice but to act.

In that case, Inter could turn to the transfer market.

The window is open until the third of February. And there is still time to sound out potential signings to bolster the defensive depth.

In the meantime, the priority is to prepare for Sunday’s Serie A match against Empoli.

There is a chance that Acerbi will be fit for that match.

However, Sunday’s match will act as a test. And shortly afterwards, and before the Champions League clash with Sparta Prague in midweek, Inter coach Inzaghi will meet with the club’s directors.

The coach and directors will discuss whether or not it is necessary to make a defensive signing.
