Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi feels that Stefan de Vrij and Lautaro Martinez both did very well against Atalanta.
The Nerazzurri coach spoke in a press conference after the Supercoppa Italiana semifinal clash, as reported by FCInterNews.
Inter booked their place in the Supercoppa Italiana for the fourth season in a row yesterday,
The Nerazzurri beat Atalanta to reach the final. They will face either AC Milan or Juventus on Monday.
It was a fairly convincing win from Inter, who won by a 2-0 scoreline.
Inter captain Lautaro Martinez was among the starters. The Argentine put in a battling performance, leading the line and linking up play.
Martinez did, however, fail to score from a few very good chances.
Meanwhile, Netherlands international defender de Vrij continued his run of starts at the back in the absence of Francesco Acerbi.
And it was another rock-solid display from the Dutchman.
Inter coach Inzaghi said that he “absolutely” expected such a solid performance from de Vrij.
“De Vrij is an absolutely top-class player,” he said. “And like everyone else, has an equally good player in the same position, Acerbi, who’s currently out.”
“We’ve been asking him to put in overtime,” Inzaghi admitted of de Vrij’s run of starts.
“Tonight I’d have liked to give him a rest. But Bastoni was a bit fatigued, and I preferred to take him off instead.”
Meanwhile, Inzaghi also said that his captain Martinez “played a match that was worthy of praised.”
“He could have scored,” the Nerazzurri coach admitted. “But credit also has to be given to Carnesecchi for his saves, which were extraordinary.”
“But he did a great job,” Inzaghi said of Martinez’s performance. “As with Thuram in the first half.”
“Thuram had a bit of a problem with his adductor,” Inzaghi noted. “He wasn’t moving freely, and I preferred to substitute him right away at halftime so as to not use a slot.”
And of whether he plans to change the team for the final, the Inter coach said “We’ll see in the next few days.”
“Last season we lost Bastoni in the semifinal,” he noted. “And we had to change the team for the final, by moving Acerbi to the left of defense and starting de Vrij.”
“We’ll have to evaluate the players who came off tonight,” said the Inter coach.
“But as a coach I’m calm. Because I have a great squad.”
