Ipswich 0 Newcastle 4 – Saturday 21 December 3pm
Instant fan / writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
Great performance all round but special mentions to the hat-trick hero and also Murphy!
Loads of positives from today, another four goals, no yellow cards so Tonali and Schar ok to play next game.
We lost at Luton this time last year, this year we are all smiles going into Christmas, can’t wait for Boxing Day…’
The Armchair Fan:
‘What a week!
Three wins, eleven goals, up the league table and semi-final of the cup. Happy days!
Absolutely brilliant today from each and every Toon player.
What a hattrick from Isak!
Beat Villa on boxing day and its a very merry Christmas indeed!’
Bazoox:
‘Why would the Rolls Royce Alexander Isak go to Arsenal to win nothing?
Eat your hearts out you over-hyped and overrated Gooners.
The cream is finally rising to the top and Newcastle have put three dominant performances together.
A strong showing from minute one that ensures that we’ll all now have a Merry Christmas after all.
Thank-you Eddie and the Hotrods.’
David Punton:
‘Hat trick hero Isak grabs the match ball as United made short work of Ipswich on the shortest day of the year.
Something has clicked this week and we were just far too good for the Tractor Boys. We’ve won at a canter.
Isak is one of the best marksmen in the top flight and he in the mood today. With the third goal an early Xmas gift from the home side.
With Tonali and Bruno running the midfield we are now just a point behind struggling Man City.
You can never have too much sympathy in football but the Bobby Robson connection at Portman Road had me feeling for them today. They’re in a relegation battle and I hope they get out of it.
As for the Mags – it’s a very Merry Xmas.’
Mark Jankowski:
‘Newcastle travel away to a team without a win at home all season. We’ve seen that story before… we know how it ends.
Only this time it wasn’t that.
Newcastle turned out a completely dominant performance to empathetically come away with 3 points.
Yes, Ipswich were poor, but let’s not downplay how brilliant we were in everything we did.
Time to enjoy Christmas and then bring on Villa on boxing day!’
Jamie Smith:
‘Comfortable 4-0 against the newly promoted blues, whose insistence on playing out from the back played right into our hands.
Jacob Murphy in particular had a field day (although he could have had more goals) and Eddie Howe had the luxury of wholesale changes with the game safe midway through the second half.
The above paragraph can be used either for last week’s game v Leicester or today’s win.
A week that has gone some way to sorting out the season and the mood, with the top six beckoning if we can keep it going against Villa on the feast of Stephen.
Tremendous for Isak to finally get the first Howe hat-trick and the assist for the third from Jacob Messi was the equal to Isak’s own effort in the role reversal at Goodison a couple of seasons back.
Lovely stuff, on to the next one.’
‘If you’d been told at the start of the season we’d be a point behind Man City after 17 games, you’d think we were in line for an incredible season.
The reality is very different of course but we are hitting some proper form now and are only two points off fifth and four from fourth.
Isak at the hat-trick is bang at it and now has six in his last four PL matches.
He probably could have had 10!
Murphy may not be a world beater but he has been effective since regaining his spot on the right.
That’s three assists and three goals in his last three PL games.
Bodes well that the team is collectively getting back to their best as three sterner challenges approach.’
GToon:
‘Great game from start to finish.
We were excellent all over the pitch.
Dubravka had two top saves to make (ED: One of which would have been called for offside if going in) and he made them.
We never looked like conceding.
In the middle Tonali looked like a dad playing against kids, he was that good.
Every player will have enjoyed that game and we are now looking something like what we hope to be.
Maybe a top class buy in January and we can start looking at Europe.
Still not convinced Schar is 100% fit, which is a worry.
Credit to the Ipswich fans who didn’t “do a Man City” at the end but stuck by their team.
Happy Xmas to all the other ppl who post on here.
I’ve enjoyed the banter and laughs and now I’m even enjoying the football too. Toon toon!’
Tony Mallabar:
‘Rightly deserved.
All the plaudits should go to “ice cold in Alex”, a throughly dominant display.
But I think special praise should go to yours truly, after I come out with this classic back in August… “Mark my word’s, Tonali will be back in Milan by Christmas.”
Another one of my back to the future quotes.
Sandro was absolutely barree on safari today, the lad’s reading of the game is Rodri-esque and long may it continue.
On a personal note, it was sad to see Ipswich basically out of their depth in the Premier League, a proud club with a great history. Let’s call this out, the gulf in class which is continually widening, is down to the red cartel.’
