The Great Dane has signed on until the summer of 2026 with Brendan Rodgers’ side, meaning the club will still have that safe pair of hands for another year or so still. At 38-years-old, Schmeichel is undeniably getting to the end stage of his playing career but at the same time, his display in the Champions League against Young Boys could have fooled everyone.

Schmeichel is invaluable for Celtic

A Premier League winner, Schmeichel’s experience between the goalposts have been invaluable for Celtic this past while, as we had a major task facing us back in the summer of 2024 when Joe Hart retired from the game. The hole he left was immense when he decided to call time on his illustrious career and head into punditry, whilst it left the club with a conundrum in the goalkeeping department.

However, the manager knew from his time at Leicester City he could rely on the tried and tested veteran and snapped him up alongside Viljami Sinisalo. It’s a move that has worked a treat, with the seasoned campaigner a major factor in our strong defensive outings this year. Barring a recent blip domestically, that backline has been so frugal and it’s no surprise that it coincides with Schmeichel as goalkeeper.

Speaking to the Official Celtic Podcast, he said: “It was probably the easiest contract extension that I’ve ever signed. We had a conversation and it was done within a day or two. I’ve loved my time here up until now, everyone’s been great with me, I’ve been welcomed with open arms.

“I know that I had some big footsteps to fill in terms of Joe but in that sense having followed Joe all those years that he was here, I knew what there was to live up to. And also if you do things right and you represent the club right the you also get that back in bucket loads. I feel that’s been the case.

“You’ve just got to grab with both hands when that chance comes”

“So, the decision to stay was very, very easy. In terms of being in football for many years, you know Celtic, and having played here for a different team many years ago, you know the size of the club. So, for me, I’ve always said when you get to a certain stage in your life and your career, you understand that opportunities to play for clubs of this stature and this size don’t come around very often.”

The Celts’ shot-stopper added: “So, to have that opportunity to represent a club like this is the kind of thing that you’ve just got to grab with both hands when that chance comes. It’s definitely not something that I take for granted.

“I understand the responsibility that it is to wear that shirt and walk across the legends of this club. It’s a big, big honour, and something that I’m proud of.”
