Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre has spoken about Santiago Gimenez and how he solved the dilemma regarding the two strikers he has.
After signing for from Feyenoord in a deal worth a total of €35m during the winter transfer window, Gimenez hit the ground running by scoring three goals in his first few games. He even netted one against his former club in the Champions League, raising the excitement levels.
However, since that early run he struggling to find the net a bit more. His last goal came against the Rotterdam club during the second leg of the Champions League play-off tie, back on February 18, meaning he has now gone one month without a goal.
Nonetheless, he still enjoys the faith of his national team, as he started in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-final win over Canada. Speaking at a press conference after the game last night, the Mexico coach was asked about playing with Gimenez and Raul Jimenez up front.
“We couldn’t test him, we couldn’t define the details of the tasks to give him, but given that one was doing well with Fulham and the other with Milan, I decided and began to think that it wouldn’t be right to exclude one of the two from this match,” he said (via Alfredo Pedulla).
“I liked them, logically in the construction of the game other players give me a little more guarantee, but we’re working. I thought that they should both play.
“This new solution for the coach is not a definitive choice, but more than anything it is a new way of playing. I don’t know if it marks a new era, but it is a new way of playing.”
