Italy and Germany go head-to-head in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals tonight.

It’s a meeting of two of world football’s proudest nations, each looking to etch their name on the Nations League trophy for the first time. After a disappointing exit at Euro 2024, Italy reached the Nation League’s last eight with a runners-up finish to France in the group stage.

It’s just one defeat in six games since last summer’s European Championship for the Azzurri.

However, Italy have not beaten Germany since the semi-finals of Euro 2012 – a run of six games across all competitions. The last encounter between the teams saw the Italians thrashed 5-2 in 2022, the first time since 1957 that the Azzurri had conceded 5+ goals in a game.

Italy team news

Mateo Retegui’s withdrawal from the squad is a blow to the Italians with the Atalanta striker pulling out through injury. Retegui is the leading scorer in Serie A this season with 22 goals.

Fiorentina forward Moise Kean is the frontrunner to replace Retegui and trails only the latter for goals in Italy’s top-flight this season. Kean has been rejuvenated since signing for Fiorentina from Juventus and has scored 20 times in all competitions.

Tottenham full-back Destiny Udogie will hope to start with Federico Dimarco another notable absentee. Head coach Luciano Spalletti has opted for a back three formation since Euro 2024, with emphasis on the contributions from wing-back.

There are three uncapped players in the squad. Defensive duo Pietro Comuzzo and Matteo Ruggeri and former Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei are hoping for senior debuts.
