Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez has hit out at the decision to rule out his penalty in his side's Champions League last-16 defeat to Real Madrid.
Diego Simeone's side were knocked out on penalties after Alvarez saw his spot-kick, which found the back of the net, ruled out by VAR after it was decided he touched the ball twice when his foot slipped - a final verdict which was not clear in replays.
Alvarez has now become the latest to publicly question the ruling, insisting he did not feel the ball touch his standing foot as he struck the penalty.
"I have watched it 1,000 times, there are videos everywhere," he explained. "The truth is that I don't feel the touch, because if there were two touches, the contact is minimal and it is very difficult to perceive it.
"I think the rule has to be a little clearer because I don't try to take any advantage and if the goalkeeper is off his line when he makes a save, the penalty is repeated. This is not to take any advantage. It's a shame what happened."
UEFA, who released footage showing a second touch of the ball in response to the controversy. have confirmed they will speak with FIFA and the International Football Association Board to try and change the rules surrounding double-touch penalties when they are clearly unintentional, as was the case with Alvarez's effort.
Atletico boss Simeone did not hide his frustration over the controversy after the final whistle, while a host of Madrid stars expressed their sympathies while arguing the referees eventually reached the correct decision.
