Jill Scott thinks Kevin De Bruyne still has the same determination and drive as when he joined City close to a decade ago.
De Bruyne clocked up his 400th appearance for the Blues in the 4-1 victory over West Ham, a team he made his first ever start against and scored his first goal against in September 2015 as his journey to Etihad stardom began.
In between those Hammers clashes, he’s forged a reputation as one of the finest players ever to pull on the City shirt, one of the brightest stars of the Premier League as well as winning 16 major trophies with his beloved City.
Scott has watched his career closely and has admired the way he’s become one of the senior stars of the side while at the same time keeping his youthful hunger to excel.
“When you’re at a club for a long period of time, I was at City for eight years, there are players who are a lot older than you and you’re looking up to them and you’re looking at how they conduct themselves whether that’s on the pitch or in the gym and then suddenly you become that player who everyone’s looking to,” she said on our Matchday Live show.
“So his role has changed in that sense. But I don’t think it’s changed too much on the pitch because even though he was younger he’s always been the standout player.
“So maybe he’s had to adapt his game a little bit in terms of energy and things like that but his desire and his will has never changed.
“I think that’s why we love him so much because you forget he’s got 10 years older while he’s been in this team and he’s still performing like one of the younger players really.”
Joleon Lescott, another guest on our Matchday Live show against the Hammers, was in agreement with Scott on KDB.
Our former defender said that De Bruyne’s style has changed over his years in sky blue but certainly not his output as his reputation has soared.
“You recognise what the team needs, what the game needs,” added Lescott.
“When he first joined, he was probably more dynamic and travelling with the ball a bit more, impacting the game in the same way but in a different style.
“He has the respect and responsibility to operate in smaller areas but use his technique a lot more and still has the same impact.
“That comes with time, your age, but also your level of consistency and dominance against the opposition.
“They respect you totally differently and have to accommodate you a lot more when you have the capabilities that he has.”
