Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe netted his 40th goal of the season to help Los Blancos seal a 2-1 comeback win over Real Mallorca last night.
Madrid were down after 11 minutes, with Martin Valjent finishing precisely beyond Thibaut Courtois to give Mallorca the lead.
However, Mbappe pulled Madrid level with a sweet finish after the break.
It was his 28th La Liga goal of the season. No Madrid player has scored more La Liga goals for the capital club in their debut season.
The 26-year-old has broken Alfredo Di Stefano’s 71-year record for the most La Liga goals scored by a player in their first season at Madrid.
The most goals Madrid legend Karim Benzema ever scored in a La Liga campaign was 27, and Mbappe surpassed it in his first season.
Mbappe is the first-ever Real Madrid player to score 40 goals in his debut season, breaking Ivan Zamorano’s 32-year record (39).
The 2018 World Cup winner now leads Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski with three goals in the La Liga top scorer race.
The former Paris Saint-Germain forward has scored ten goals in his last seven La Liga games, including a hat-trick versus Barcelona and braces against Celta Vigo, Leganes, and Villarreal.
This is Mbappe’s third consecutive season of scoring 40+ goals and his fourth in five. There is an argument for him that he has been the best footballer in the world over the past three years.
Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, his first season in Madrid will end without any major silverware.
However, with Madrid changing coaches and approaching the market with intent, they are clearly keen on challenging for top honours next term.
Madrid youngster Jacobo Ramon scored a dying-minute goal to seal the win for Los Blancos against Mallorca, but the result only postponed Barcelona’s inevitable celebrations.
The Catalans will likely claim the trophy when they take on city rivals Espanyol later today.
