France captain Kylian Mbappé (25) has ranked sixth in the 2024 Ballon d’Or standings. The Real Madrid centre-forward was not expected to finish on the podium considering he has struggled with France at the Euros, where he sustained a nose fracture in the opening group stage game against Austria. Mbappé scored one goal, from the spot against Poland, in Germany last summer. Mbappé was third in the 2023 Ballon d’Or standings, behind Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland.

Like his Real Madrid teammates, the former PSG player did not make the trip to Paris’ Théâtre du Châtelet with the Champions League-winning club boycotting the Ballon d’Or ceremony entirely, amid reports that Vinicius Jr. would miss out on winning the most prestigious individual prize in world football. The reports proved true and Mbappé was nowhere to be seen when he was called on stage to collect the Gerd Müller trophy, awarded to the player who scored the most goals during the 2023-2024 season. The Frenchman would share the award with England captain Harry Kane who was on par with 52 goals scored.
