The Los Angeles Galaxy has been in Major League Soccer since 1996. Now, in their 30th season, one of the most successful franchises in MLS history is loaded with international talent.
Countries such as Japan, Ghana, Mexico, Brazil and more have had their native athletes join the LA Galaxy. Ireland is another country that has offered a star to this team.
Monday is St. Patrick's Day. It's a holiday celebrated with luck, pots of gold, leprechauns, and wearing the color green. Here is a look at the only player with Irish roots to play for the LA Galaxy.
The Tallaght, Dublin, Ireland native joined the LA Galaxy and MLS in 2011. This was the year that the team won a third championship in the league. They would go on to win another immediately the next season in 2012.
Keane was a striker who scored 83 times in 125 appearances for the Los Angeles Galaxy. A three-time MLS champion, he won again in 2014.
His first score for the LA Galaxy came against the San Jose Earthquakes in mid-August 2011. In 2014, Keane was awarded the MLS Most Valuable Player Award. He scored 19 times and recorded 14 assists in 29 appearances.
Keane earned more hardware that year as he also earned the 2014 MLS Cup MVP Award. His goal in the 111th minute of the championship game against the New England Revolution. The victory gave the LA Galaxy their fifth MLS Cup title.
Between 1998 and 2006, he also played for the Republic of Ireland's national team. He scored 68 international goals for the squad in 146 appearances.
Keane made the switch from player to coaching in 2018. He is currently the manager of Ferencváros, a Hungarian football club based in the city of Budapest.
