Lazio are seemingly lagging behind in their plans to renovate the Stadio Flaminio, as their competitors ‘Roma Nuoto’ have received an initial green light.

The Background

The Italian capital side has been sharing the state-owned Stadio Olimpico with their crosstown rivals AS Roma for decades, but the Biancocelesti are now eager to break away and own a separate stadium that can be a hub for their supporters all week long. The club has identified the currently defunct Stadio Flaminio as the best solution, so they have been working on a renovation project.

Positive Meeting

Lazio president Claudio Lotito has recently presented his club’s plans to the Mayor of Rome who expressed his appreciation for the project following what was described as a positive meeting at the municipality. And yet, the Aquile risk being left in the dust.

Roma Nuoto Make Progess

According to Il Tempo (via Calcio e Finanza), ‘Roma Nuoto’, who intend to transform the Flaminio into a ‘temple for women’s football’, have received approval from the Conference of Services after threatening legal action following the long and unjustified delay in the process. This project still requires approval from the municipality regarding financial sustainability before being submitted to the Council and subsequently to the Capitoline Assembly for a possible declaration of public interest.

Blow for Lazio

On the other hand, the evaluation process for the Lazio project has yet to start, so the Serie A club is at serious risk of missing out on the Stadio Flaminio, especially if the alternative project remains on the right track.
