Despite what the English media would have you believe, Manchester United haven’t given up hope that they could be the ones to sign in-demand Viktor Gyokeres.

The unstoppable forward’s future is set to be one of the sagas of the summer as he prepares for life after Sporting Lisbon, having enjoyed two illustrious seasons at the club.

He won’t be short of suitors when the transfer window gets underway, either. In England, Arsenal, Chelsea and United have all been credited with interest amidst their ongoing searches for a prolific No.9.

Surprisingly, United are said to be the only ‘major European club’ to have taken ‘concrete steps’ in pursuit of Gyokeres, according to a report from L’Equipe, relayed by Get French Football News.

The French outlet adds that Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain have now ruled themselves out of the race after learning of his £85 million release clause. However, Fabrizio Romano recently affirmed that a fee in the region of £55m would be enough to prise Gyokeres from Sporting.

What could prove to be a major stumbling block for the Red Devils, though, is that the Swede is said to be adamant about playing Champions League football next season, which United can only offer if they reign victorious in tonight’s Europa League showdown against an equally desperate Tottenham Hotspur.

When Gyokeres kept tight-lipped on his future in the aftermath of Sporting’s title celebrations, journalist Tom McDermott claimed: “He’s waiting for MUFC to win on Wednesday. If not, then it’s [Liam] Delap.”

The Old Trafford faithful have been well aware for weeks now that Delap, 22, is reportedly INEOS’ first-choice target to lead Ruben Amorim’s frontline next season.

He poses as a considerably cheaper option due to his £30m release clause, but has racked up significantly less experience than Gyokeres, who is four years his senior.
