Carlton Palmer has told FLW his verdict on Plymouth Argyle's survival chances
Carlton Palmer believes that Plymouth Argyle won’t have enough to avoid relegation to League One this season despite their major Liverpool victory.
The Pilgrims knocked out the current Premier League leaders from the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon, winning 1-0 through a Ryan Hardie penalty.
However, Miron Muslic’s side are still under threat of relegation out of the Championship.
Plymouth will play last year’s finalists Manchester City in the next round of the cup, but are currently bottom of the second tier table.
Palmer has praised the win over Liverpool, but has predicted that Plymouth will still ultimately suffer relegation to League One.
While he believes there are enough games left to turn it around, he is unsure whether the team is really good enough to overcome the gap to the clubs ahead.
“Plymouth Argyle beat Liverpool in the FA Cup, magnificent result,” Palmer told Football League World.
“Listen, they’re not dead and buried by any stretch of the imagination.
“They’re on 25 points at the bottom of the league table, and Hull City, just outside the relegation spots on 29 points, Portsmouth on 30 points.
“So, they’re not dead and buried by any stretch of the imagination, but there’s a lot of work to do for them to get out of it.
“I would be very surprised to see Plymouth get out of it.
“When you're in that position down at the bottom, you win a game, you’re then counting on both Derby County and Luton Town to lose, and you’re still not out of the bottom three.
“It’s going to be very, very difficult, it’s not going to be insurmountable and it’s not impossible.
“I don’t see Plymouth getting out it, I really don’t, I think it’s too much to do.
“There’s enough games, but I just think there’s too much to do, and they didn’t do enough in the transfer window to suggest that they’ve got the players to get them out of trouble.”
Plymouth are certainly up against it at the bottom of the Championship table, but there’s still time to turn things around.
Muslic has had a big impact since taking charge in January, and the win over Liverpool is a moment fans will remember for quite some time.
That win should give the players the belief that they can turn things around in the final months of the season.
Sheffield Wednesday were in a worse position last season and survived, so it is possible they survive but they absolutely need to string together a couple of wins soon to have any chance.
