Paris Saint-Germain made history last night by becoming the first team to knock Liverpool out of a European tie after the Reds had won the first leg away from home.

Prior to the game, The Reds had hoped that the Anfield atmosphere would be the difference maker in this game, but the quality of the French champions was too much for them.

The home side had a very promising start with Mo Salah coming close in the 5th minute. As Mac Allister cut the ball across the box the Egyptian winger set his sights on goal, but his chance was squandered by Nuno Mendes’ goalline clearance.

12” Dembele scored the opener following some scruffy defending from Liverpool. Bradley Barcola got the better of Robertson and cut the ball back aiming for the six-yard box, but Konate took the ball away from Alisson to leave an open net for Dembele.

It was a close game in the first half with both teams playing gung-ho attacking football, however, PSG remained the favourites.

32” Mac Allister loses the ball to Fabian Ruiz in the middle of the park, leading to a quick Paris counterattack with Dembele there to react first but Alisson was quick off his line to cut out the chance.

Half-time. Living up to the hype from last week’s clash, Paris Saint-Germain lead Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield following a fine first-half display. The visitors rode their luck to stay all square in the first 10 minutes, but since then they have cut Liverpool’s defence open on numerous occasions.

53” Liverpool started the half well as Trent Alexander-Arnold saw a stinging shot saved by Donnarumma, he then met the follow-up in which he hit the base of the right post. After he whipped the rebound across the six-yard box, Szoboszlai prodded it home from close range but it was flagged for offside.

58” Liverpool won a corner from a Szoboszlai shot that was deflected wide by Pacho. Mac Allister’s out-swinging corner was met by Diaz but it was heroically clawed away from the goalline by Donnarumma.

62” Another corner for Liverpool and another goalline clearance from PSG. This time Kvaratskhelia was there to clear Salah’s back post effort following Mac Allister’s corner.

Will Liverpool be in the market for a new left-back?

73” Alexander-Arnold was substituted with an injury with what seemed to be an ankle sprain. Jarell Quansah is on to replace him. Darwin Nunez has also come off the bench to replace Jota.

79” The substitute Jarell Quansah sees his diving header hit the left-hand post, with Donnarumma beaten that was a golden chance for the home side.

83” Nunez and Diaz pierced through PSG’s back line with the Colombian forcing the Italian goalkeeper into a sharp save.

87” Against the run of play PSG came close to winning the tie with their first attack for almost half an hour, as the ball was worked over to the Georgian on the left wing whose curling shot was narrowly over the crossbar.

EXTRA-TIME

93” A quality cross from Zaire-Emery saw Beraldo rise high in the penalty box who guided his header narrowly wide of the post.

95” Doue’s magical feet helped him evade the wall of Red on the edge of Liverpool’s box, but his shot was only inches wide of the post.

Half-time extra-time

109” Alisson to the rescue once again as he dropped down to his left to deny Dembele of what surely would have been an extra-time winner.

120+1” Joao Neves OFF-Goncalo Ramos ON. It seems like PSG are preparing for penalties.

Penalties

GOAL! Vitinha’s slow run-up sees a very risky penalty down to the right of the keeper narrowly evade Alisson.

GOAL! Mo Salah stepped up and dispatched it with power into the left-hand side of the net. Donnarumma was left rooted to the spot.

GOAL! Goncalo Ramos drilled his first touch of the game down into the bottom left-hand corner. 2-1 PSG.

MISS! Darwin Nunez had the first miss of the shootout as the striker planted his penalty in saving range for the Italian goalkeeper.

GOAL! The scorer of the only goal in this game Dembele then stepped up and slotted it into the top right corner to make it 3-1 to the visitors.

MISS! It was then Curtis Jones’ turn to step up to the spot who tried to place it into the bottom left but his tame penalty was not good enough to beat Donnarumma.

GOAL! With nerves of steel, the teenager Desire Doue steps up to take the winning penalty, which he blasted into the top left corner sending PSG into the quarter-finals.
