Kerkez Ends Liverpool Speculation as Reds Assess Left-Back Options

Liverpool’s dominance in the Premier League continued with a commanding 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town at Anfield, maintaining their grip at the top of the table. Arne Slot’s side, now six points clear with a game in hand, remain on course for silverware. Yet, despite their strong position, there are areas within the squad that Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s incoming sporting director, is expected to strengthen in the summer.

One of those is left-back. While names such as Alphonso Davies and Milos Kerkez have been linked, the latter has now dismissed any suggestion of a move to Anfield. Speaking directly on a YouTube live stream, the Bournemouth full-back made his stance unequivocally clear.

“I will not go to Liverpool. For everybody listening, I will not go to Liverpool.”

With that statement, one of the more persistent transfer links can now be ruled out, forcing Liverpool to look elsewhere for reinforcements in a position that remains a key focus.

Liverpool’s Need for Left-Back Reinforcement

With Andy Robertson turning 30 and dealing with increasing injury setbacks, Liverpool are actively exploring options to future-proof the position. Kostas Tsimikas has been a useful deputy, but questions remain over whether he is a long-term solution for a side that demands high intensity from its full-backs.

Richard Hughes, known for his meticulous recruitment strategy at Bournemouth, will be expected to find a left-back who fits Liverpool’s aggressive, possession-based system. Kerkez, a player who has impressed in his first Premier League season, was widely touted as a potential target. His performances, particularly in one-on-one defensive situations and his ability to drive forward in attack, made him an attractive proposition.

Szoboszlai’s Praise for His International Teammate

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, who has quickly become an influential figure under Slot, recently singled out Kerkez when asked about his best friend in the Premier League.

“I would choose Bournemouth’s left-back, Milos Kerkez,” Szoboszlai said (via Nemzetisport).

“He looks like me, only a little crazier than me. But he still has time to grow up.”

Szoboszlai’s comments reflect the strong bond the two share from their time together with the Hungarian national team. Yet, while their friendship is evident, a club reunion at Anfield is now firmly off the table following Kerkez’s emphatic rejection of the move.

Where Liverpool Turn Next

With Kerkez no longer an option, Liverpool must reassess their shortlist of left-back targets. Alphonso Davies remains the standout name, though reports suggest he is close to a new deal with Bayern Munich. Other potential candidates could emerge as the summer approaches, with Hughes tasked with identifying a player capable of providing long-term balance to the squad.

Liverpool’s interest in strengthening the full-back positions aligns with Slot’s tactical approach. The Dutch manager, known for his fluid attacking systems, relies on full-backs who can contribute significantly in possession and transition phases. The search for a dynamic left-back will likely intensify in the coming months, ensuring that Liverpool are well-equipped for the challenges ahead.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

For Liverpool, Kerkez’s outright rejection of a move to Anfield is somewhat surprising. The young full-back has all the qualities needed to thrive in Liverpool’s system—pace, tenacity, and an aggressive approach both in defence and attack. His age and development potential made him a logical option, but his declaration removes any speculation about a summer move.

The question now is who Liverpool turn to. While Davies is the high-profile name, prising him away from Bayern Munich will be difficult. If Liverpool are looking for a cost-effective solution, other emerging full-backs across Europe could become viable options.

Robertson remains one of the finest left-backs in world football, but Liverpool must be proactive in planning for the future. Slot’s high-intensity system will require depth, particularly with Tsimikas yet to fully convince as a long-term successor.

While Kerkez would have been an exciting addition, Liverpool will not be short of alternatives. If anything, his comments ensure that speculation does not become a distraction as the club focuses on the title race.
