Former Liverpool defender and popular Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has explained why he has ‘no doubt’s about the fact that Italy international Federico Chiesa was worth around €80m a couple of summers ago.
Carragher was on co-commentary duty with Sky for Liverpool’s recent 5-1 thrashing of West Ham in the Carabao Cup, where he spoke about Chiesa’s start to life at Anfield under Arne Slot.
The former Liverpool defender feels that Chiesa was ‘a £70m to £80m player’ after Italy won the EUROs in the summer of 2021, and feels that his injury record is the only reason why Liverpool were able to get him for such a low-cut fee.
“I don’t think you’re exaggerating when you’re talking about Chiesa and looking back towards the European Championships in 2021, that he was a £70 to £80 million player, at that time. There’s no doubt about it,” Carragher said, reported via the Liverpool Echo.
“Liverpool got him for £10million. Of course, there’s reasons why you get him for £10million.
“He’s had a lot of injury problems… You know you talk about the commentator’s curse, maybe he’s heard me down there that there’s a £70-80million player a few years ago. He showed us a glimpse then.”
Chiesa joined Liverpool in a cut-price deal from Juventus at the end of the summer transfer window. The ex-Fiorentina winger was into the final year of his contract in Turin, and had been told that he would not be part of Thiago Motta’s plans for the 2024-25 season.
He had to wait until the very end of the summer transfer window in order to secure a move away from the Allianz Stadium. Barcelona were the only other club to register a serious interest at the end of the transfer window.
