Federico Chiesa’s recent struggles with fitness and illness have started to raise eyebrows, as questions mount about his future at Liverpool. Since his £10 million summer move—potentially rising to £12.5 million—the talented Italian winger has had minimal impact on the pitch, and fresh reports now suggest that a January move could be on the cards.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot offered some insight into Chiesa’s fitness battles, shedding light on his lack of playing time. Speaking after Chiesa missed the Southampton match, Slot confirmed: “Federico Chiesa is feeling sick, unfortunately for him because he had some minutes against Southampton. He was sick in the last two days and today as well so we couldn’t bring him to the game.”

This marks the third instance of illness reported by Slot since Chiesa began working towards full match fitness. The winger has been plagued by setbacks, with Slot admitting earlier this month: “What he needs is playing time and the problem is, if you haven’t played for five or six months, it’s difficult for a manager because you don’t know what to expect. Maybe Southampton will be a good moment for him to get some minutes.”
Despite those hopes, Chiesa’s recovery has been anything but smooth, and this latest bout of illness adds another chapter to what is quickly becoming a frustrating season for both player and club.
Chiesa’s lack of game time has inevitably sparked speculation about his future. According to a report from L’Eco di Bergamo, Serie A side Atalanta have shown interest in bringing the winger back to his homeland. The Italian club are reportedly exploring a loan deal in January, with an option to buy—a move that could allow Chiesa to restart his career away from the demanding expectations at Anfield.
Atalanta’s interest comes at a time when Liverpool’s attacking depth is under scrutiny. While the initial £10 million outlay on Chiesa represents a low-risk investment, the potential January exit raises questions about whether the club ever truly believed in his long-term role.
With Liverpool pushing for success on multiple fronts, patience is understandably wearing thin among fans. Chiesa was brought in as an exciting option for the wide forward role, but his lack of availability has left supporters wondering if the deal was ever destined to succeed. Slot’s comments suggest a genuine effort to reintegrate the player, but recurring illness and limited minutes on the pitch have hampered any signs of progress.

It’s worth noting that Liverpool have a track record of nurturing players back to full fitness and confidence. However, with the January transfer window looming and Atalanta reportedly circling, one has to wonder if Chiesa might be better off heading back to Italy to recapture his form and rebuild his reputation.
The upcoming weeks will be crucial for both Chiesa and Liverpool. With Atalanta showing interest and Chiesa struggling to make his mark, a move could benefit all parties involved. For Liverpool, offloading a player who hasn’t found his feet could free up funds and squad space for more immediate reinforcements. For Chiesa, a return to Serie A might provide the stability and playing time needed to reignite his career.
Let’s be clear, the player could toll be of real use if he can give Mo Salah and others some rest at times. As the January window nears, it’s clear that Chiesa’s future remains uncertain. Whether he stays to fight for his place or opts for a fresh start elsewhere, the next month will be pivotal for the winger and the club.
