Liverpool were very close to striking a deal to sign Anthony Gordon this summer.

In a bid to meet Premier League spending rules, Newcastle looked to offload their winger with Joe Gomez set to go the other way in an illusive swap deal.

An agreement was reached between the two clubs with both players expressing their pleasure in the move whilst being with England at Euro 2024.

Initial talks didn't go too well, as Liverpool wouldn't meet the £100m asking price. Newcastle's idea of including Jarell Quansah didn't go down well, either, but a compromise was found.

Liverpool would sell Gomez to Newcastle for £45m and then buy the Scouser for £75m. That would allow the Magpies to secure the funds they needed while also signing in a top player. The Reds would then get a far easier deal financially.

But things fell apart. Newcastle found a better solution to their issues when they offloaded two distinct players for large sums of money after scheduling medical for Gordon. In this manner, they would be able to retain the winger, a player they were never really eager to offload.

When Newcastle informed Gordon that he would not be sold back in June, they said they would reward his excellent form last season with a lucrative long-term deal, according to Telegraph Sport.

Sources close to the player, though, have said that the progress has been slow. As things stand, Gordon does not feel his true value is being reflected in the terms on offer.

While things have moved on, it's a situation that keeps rumours of a move to Anfield swirling. Liverpool are well-stocked on the left wing but how often does a homegrown top talent become available?

Gordon's disappointment resulted in a lack of EURO 2024 action

Gordon was eager on a move to Anfield, given he's a boyhood Red, and the news of a breakdown in negotiations led to a lack of involvement at the Euros this summer.

The report added that there is no point pretending otherwise. Gordon was keen on a move to his boyhood club in the summer and even told team-mates, while on international duty with England, that the switch was going to happen.

Former England manager Gareth Southgate was well aware the player was distracted by the talk and Telegraph Sport understands this was one of the reasons he was not involved more at the Euros. Gordon played a handful of minutes in the group stage as a substitute and did not appear again.
